This is the first class in a series that will take you through iPhone basics. In this class, we go through setting up the phone to include Apple ID, Security, Data transfer/restore, and Settings Menu. Browsers & Extensions (MAC) We will discuss the different browsers for your computer, (Safari, Chrome, Firefox, etc.; there are over 100) and explore the many capabilities each offers. Will also look at browser security/speed, and see if one browser is better than the other. Did you know that you can add “Apps” to your browser to make it more useful to include blocking many of those pesky pop-up ads, using a password manager, or just changing the appearance. Following the discussion, we are going to run through several exercises on the computer using Safari, a browser for the MAC. Platform: MAC

Do you ever wonder if there is a better, more secure encrypted way to store all those passwords needed to use a computer, smart phone or tablet on a daily basis? Did you know that longer, more complex passwords can deter hackers and protect you? In this session, we will discuss what defines a strong password how to safely track passwords, and make them secure at the same time. We will conclude with a demonstration using a password manager.

We look at strategies for backing up your computer. There are two motivating factors: (1) you could have a catastrophic hardware failure, (2) you may accidentally delete an important file. Topics are: terminology, discussion of backup software and recovery, frequency of backups, imaging a hard drive, and maintenance procedures that make backups easier and more effective. We will also go through the steps required to backup your Mac using Time Machine, the free software bundled with your operating system.

Win 10 – OneDrive
We will discuss Microsoft’s cloud app OneDrive and practice using it for online storage, partial backups, sharing and syncing. See how straightforward the “cloud” can be. You should take Win 10A and Win 10B before taking this class.

This is a companion to Win 10 Photos and uses the same app. The latest version of Video Maker incorporates much of what was in Microsoft’s older app Windows Movie Maker, which is no longer supported. We will cover the basics of making your own slideshow or movie: insert photos and/or movie clips, edit, add sound (narration or music), pan and zoom, insert titles, and add special effects. Video Editor does not have the powerful tools that professional software has but is straightforward to use because drag and drop is the main tool.
While you won’t be making a Hollywood quality movie with this software, it can produce a nice video for YouTube or your own personal use. You should take Win 10A and Win 10B before attending this class.

This free software package from Google not only gives you the same features as their online maps do (roads, satellite photos, points of interest, etc.) but can be “tilted” to provide 3-D representations of terrain. You probably know that Google collects satellite images and has vehicles traveling the world taking ground level photos. Google Earth is the app that changes this data into a virtual reality that allows you to wander the world (or at least the parts where it’s allowed to do this). Behind all this you can access an encyclopedia of information as to what you are seeing. We’ll cover how to get the software, set it up, and practice a few basic techniques. The remaining time will be spent experimenting with what it can do and how you can use it on Earth, our Moon, Mars, and in outer space.

This class is a follow-up to Google Earth 1, which you should take first. We’ll delve more deeply into the features of this free app, such as using placemarks and recording a tour. We’ll practice using more of the many layers; for example, Places, Roads and Transportation, Gallery, and the catch-all “More”. Finally, we’ll see some interesting things you can do with Google Streets that you probably would never think of trying.

The only prerequisite is that you have a Mac computer with macOS Sierra or El Capitan. If you have a laptop, please bring it to class.

This is a two-hour class for people who want an overview of word processing using the ribbon interface. We will practice how to set up, format, spell-check, save & retrieve, copy and paste, insert and delete, etc. The software used will be a post-2010 version of Microsoft Office that drops the old menu and tool bars of pre-2007 versions.

Learn intermediate level word processing techniques such as more powerful formatting options, how to use the ruler bar and tabs, symbol insert, templates, headers and footers, borders, and more. All will be done with the ribbon interface.

The focus is on tables, how to create, edit and format them. Learn how to sort by columns, do simple column arithmetic operations, and how to achieve better alignment control.

This class will focus on Microsoft Word images – how to insert them into documents, manipulate them, and flow text around them. We’ll be using Pictures, Clip Art Images, AutoShapes, Callouts, and Word Art from the drawing tool.

Learn the essential features of Google Photos and its free cloud-based photo storage service. In this course, learn how to set up Google Photos on iOS, Android, and desktop computers and then how to organize, edit, and share photos and videos. Google Photos app is available on all kinds of computers and smartphones, so no matter which device you have, your photos will be available wherever you have access to the Internet.
This class will use the Google Photos app for mobile devices – iPhone, iPad, or Android phone or tablet – and will assume that students have the app installed prior to class.

This hands-on class is geared toward learning to use all the power of the Google Photos app on mobile devices (iOS and Android). Learn to create albums, stories, and movies. Add music to movies, change the order of photos in a film strip, edit albums and movies, share creations with links, and other activities.
Prerequisite: Google Photos 1. Bring your laptop or mobile device with the Google Photos app installed and some or many of your uploaded photos.
Platforms: All.
This 1-hour workshop will provide hands-on practice using your Google Photos to create a movie. Start with an album to be used for the movie, add music, save it, then share the movie in email or social media.
Prerequisite: Google Photos 2.
